I receive a daily scripture and message from Pastor Dion Todd. This one really struck home. When he stated “any relationship that stops talking will slowly but surely die. Relationships that talk a lot grow in strength. We all have friends that we have lost contact with because we ceased talking at some point. Most often, we just get too busy with our daily life to maintain a strong relationship with very many people at a time. We keep a special few”.
So in life, I think we have many acquaintances but how many true lasting friends? Moving to Ecuador really made it apparent to me which folks would stand up to the test of distance & time. I have to admit that I have been disappointed in those folks that I have reached out to in email at first they were quick and interested to respond but slowly that began to die and my emails have gone unanswered. While other friends always take a moment out of their busy lives to send me back a response. Perhaps the friends that I left behind think that I have abandoned them. I do not expect my USA friends to stay in constant contact with us but it is so great to hear what is going on back home. I get a special thrill when I hear from a former co-worker or friend just out of the blue.
I also wonder why is it I now seem to have more friends in Ecuador both American, Canadian & Ecuadorian? I think one reason, is now with a distressed life and out of the “rat race,” I have more time to be a friend to someone. Friendship is something that you cultivate and must nourish. Plus, most of the folks here are like-minded since they have left family & friends going “off the grid” to seek a new adventure. We never ran away from our beloved country but ran towards a new adventure in what we consider our last hooray. Our new friends are now a part of our extended family and are always willing to step up and assist us or just listen when we need a shoulder. We have met each other’s families and guests when they arrive for a visit and love and treat them just like they are one of our own. So the friendships blossom. I am amazed and blessed by the Ecuadorian friends that we have made and sometimes wonder what we would do without them! They are always ready, willing, and prepared to advise and listen to us. Sometimes I think moving to another country was a life lesson I needed to experience, grow and learn from. I would welcome your comments and thoughts.
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving! We have so much to be thankful for this year.
