We have friends that live in Cayambe and on our way to dinner yesterday. We stopped to look at statues simply because I had no idea what they meant. I am so glad we stopped and I learned Korean artist Yoo Young-ho donated “The Greeting Man” in Cayambe Ecuador. The blue statues are 6 meters tall and face each other while standing on the opposite side of the equator. The following message was on a plaque which I copied because I thought the message was wonderful and meaningful.
Hello
I am Greeting Man coming from the opposite side of the earth, Korea. My posture describes the general way of greeting in Korea. Greeting is the first step to build a relation. Nothing happens if we just pass by. Without the first step to build a relation, nothing happens if we just pass by without greeting when running into each other on the street but we create a relationship and become friends if we exchange greetings. Greeting is a basic and human act as well as a starting point to help us to understand each other, exceeding any boundaries between people from different historical and cultural backgrounds, nations, and human races. Furthermore, a greeting is the strongest tool in forging relationships between humankind and nature and even further into the universe.
Now I am here at the equator line of Cayambe, where it is famous due to the Cayambe volcano to wish the encounter between the southern and northern hemisphere of the global village, peace, and reconciliation. If we are able to share consideration and respect for others, as well as warm affection by greeting as the Greeting Man. It will become a small but meaningful start for creating the world’s co-existence and peace. I will keep conveying in many places on the earth, the message of peace which has the greeting.
I greet you all from the bottom of my heart “Anneyeonghaseyo”

I like to say it is the thrill of the hunt in most situations but in this case, it was the thrill of a new discovery.
Special thank you to the folks that follow my blog.
